Named after an ammunition magazine - or warehouse - that was built on the street in the late eighteenth century, the lower part of Magazine was initially used as a storage area for commercial and industrial goods. Today the street is a thriving place of commerce, adorned with countless restaurants, pubs, and boutiques. And with its small-town, main street charm, it's hard to believe that you are only minutes from downtown. |
Magazine Street runs through some of New Orleans' Most Historic and Treasured Neighborhoods. Start Uptown at the historic Audubon Zoo & Park Or Downtown at Canal Street. No trip to New Orleans is complete until you visit Magazine Street, this is one of the most diverse places in the world for buying antiques and collectibles, this nearly 6-mile strip of quaint shops and restaurants, is truly a must do when visiting New Orleans.

Nilo Lanzas "NL" (American, New Orleans, (1929-2004)
A self-taught folk artist who began painting in 1993 at the age of 63 and has since been creating an exuberantly fanciful world filled with alligators, insurance men, biblical figures, birds and lovers, using oil paint on old doors, wood attached to window frames, and other remnants of houses.
General and Artistic Background
In 1956, NL made New Orleans, Louisiana his home. He was in the army, the restaurant business, antiques, then, at the age, 63, without ever having tried, he began to paint. NL said, "One day, I decided to start painting 10-12 hours a day, and now, I'll never stop. I love it." Many others seem to love NL's work as well. His work can be found in collections all over the United States, in Europe, South America, and in the celebrity collections. (The information was provided by NL folk Art)
